When I was in 7th grade I decided I was going to join the track team.  I quit after the first practice!  🙂  (Hey – in my own defense, the coaches were mean plus I didn’t like missing out on Full House re-runs after school).

Uncle Jessie > Running

15 years later…I “became” a runner.  Since graduating from college I have always stayed active and exercised regularly, but my workouts mainly consisted of regular gym activities: elliptical, group exercise classes (Body Pump, Body Step, Body Attack, and Zumba are some of my favs), occasional treadmill (even though I hate running on the treadmill), pilates,  and yoga.  The desire to run a marathon came to me when I first moved to Dallas in 2007 when I saw all the hoop-la that the Dallas White Rock Half and Full Marathon attracted.  The thought of running 13.1 miles seemed crazy…and 26.2 seemed like serious torture.  I kinda wanted to do one…but didn’t think I could.

Or in my case…Full House

Fast forward to spring of 2010.  This was the time of my life where I feel like I really started to find who I was as a twenty-something adult.  I had a new apartment, new outlook on life after recently becoming single again, and the desire to do some different things in my life.  My cousin Stephanie and her then boyfriend (now fiance!) told me about the Katy Trail 5k which was happening in May.  They said they were signing up and I should too…and they sold me on the fact that afterwards there was a picnic with free food and beer.  Sold.  They had me at free food.I didn’t really know if I could run 3.1 miles, but told myself my goal was to run the entire time…and you know what?  I did!  I was so proud of myself!  I ended up finished in 31:36 averaging a 10:08/mile!  This isn’t my best 5k time, but looking back I think it’s pretty impressive considering I wasn’t even running much prior to this.

Girls on the run!!

As the summer went on, I attempted to go running more on the Katy Trail, but given the Texas heat in the summer…it was not a fun task.  So at that moment I put my running goals on hold.  Later that fall, around Thanksgiving I began to hear all the hype about the White Rock Marathon again, and it got my running juices flowing (running juices?  is that sweat??).  I knew it was too late to sign up for the 2010 White Rock Half Marathon, but I told myself I would run the 2011 race.  Around Christmas, I decided I couldn’t wait another year, and saw an advertisement for the Rock n Roll Dallas Half Marathon that was scheduled for the end of April 2011.  I saw they were having a promotion for a free water bottle and free pack of GUs (at this point I had no idea what GU was, but I am a sucker for free goods so they had me sold).  I signed up!!

I scoured the iPhone app store for some “training apps” but they all ended up being kinda lame, and I ended up trying to follow the Hal Higdon Novice Training plan.  Remember how I said earlier how I didn’t like running on the treadmill?  Well that never changed.  I did most of my runs outdoors on the Katy Trail.  This made things difficult because it got dark early, and I am afraid of the dark strangers attacking me in the dark.  I basically tried to get out and run whenever I could and tried to stay consistent with Hal’s suggested “long run” each week.  I came across a few hiccups in my training…mainly the intense cold, snowy, and icy weather we had in February 2011.

Ooops...I was supposed to run 10 miles today!

St Patty’s Day festivities a week before the race didn’t help me either! 🙂  In the end, I had only completed 7 miles before the big race.  So with that said…I was a nervous girl on that March  27th day! Also – didn’t get the memo that you are supposed to wear makeup when you run in Dallas! 🙂

Never too nervous to fist pump while fueling up with an energy bar!Around mile 8 and so happy to see my fans!

But I did it!!  I finished my first half in 2:24:14!  I impressed myself considering I had no idea what I would finish in and listed “3:00” as my estimated finish time!  I was so proud of myself and from that moment on…I “became a runner”! 🙂

With my fan club! 🙂

Since March, I joined the Dallas Running Club, finished 4 5ks, 2 10ks, a 15k, half marathon relay with my sister :), and the race I told myself I would run – the Dallas White Rock Half Marathon (that is a story of its own…).  I am also signed up for 2 half marathons and a 15k so far in 2012 and hope to keep pushing myself to beat my own personal records.  By no means do I consider myself to be “elite”, awesome (well I am awesome…but you know what I mean), or some kind of professional runner.  I run because it clears my head, gives me something to work towards, and I can do it all by myself!

8th and 5th place at a 5k!
